What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is IRCC's application management system for three key economic immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP). Launched in 2015, Express Entry aims to identify candidates with the best potential to integrate into Canada's workforce and economy.

Understanding the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)

  1. Age
  2. Language ability
  3. Education
  4. Work experience
  5. Occupation

These factors are assigned scores, which together form a candidate’s overall CRS score. Higher scores increase the likelihood of receiving an ITA in an upcoming draw.

What is Category-Based Selection?

Introduced in 2023, category-based selection draws target candidates who can fill urgent workforce gaps. The current categories are:

  1. Healthcare occupations
  2. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professions
  3. Trades occupations (e.g., carpenters, plumbers, contractors)
  4. Transport occupations
  5. Agriculture and agri-food occupations
  6. French-language proficiency

French proficiency draws, in particular, are significant, with IRCC aiming for these to account for 30% of ITAs issued in category-based draws this year. To date, IRCC has issued 15,600 ITAs in this category.

Benefits of the New Regulations

  1. Improved Oversight:
  2. Direct reporting to IRCC enhances the government’s ability to monitor institutions and students.

  3. Greater Transparency:
  4. The new rules ensure that all parties are aware of students’ educational activities, reducing the chances of non-compliance.

  5. Enhanced Educational Standards:
  6. By keeping students in their initial institutions, the government can ensure that educational standards are maintained.
