Eligibility Criteria for USA Student Visa
The eligibility requirements are based on the type of visa that the candidate falls under. In order to be eligible for non-immigrant categories, he/she must obtain clearance from either USCIS or SEVIS i.e., Student and Exchange Visitor Information System or the Department of Labor. Therefore one must thoroughly analyze whether they meet all of the requirements and eligibility criteria of a particular visa category they wish to apply for.
US Student Visa Requirements
In order to be eligible for the US universities, students:
- Must have a valid passport with a minimum validity of 6 months after they stay in the country
- Must have a DS-160 Form (Nonimmigrant visa application confirmation page)
- Must make the Payment of the application fee if they are seeking a student visa and have Form I-20 on hand (Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status)
- Must provide the receipt number on the petition submitted by the US employer (I-129 form), in case applying for a work visa
- Must have provisional certificates or original marks sheets
- Must have the Score card for standardized tests such as IELTS, TOEFL, GMAT, GRE whatever is applicable.
- Must prove that they have adequate funds in their bank account to cover the expenses in the duration of your course.
- Must prove to the Visa officer that they will leave the country on completion of the study programme
- Have to give a personal interview at the US embassy as part of his/her application procedure.

Cost of Studying in the USA
There are two major categories under which the US Universities falls i.e., public-funded and private institutions. Usually the public Universities are much cheaper than the private ones as public Universities are based on non-resident costs. An individual will approximately require $10,000 to $55,000 annually to cover their tuition fees. Following table shows the average tuition fees for different levels:

However, it usually costs $510 for an F1 visa application which permits overseas students to study full-time at an institution in the US as a part of the SEVP i.e., Student and Exchange Visitor Program. It must be noted that the candidate should apply at least three months prior the start date of their course.
Further, those applicants who are engaging in a US government-sponsored programme which begin with codes G-1, G-2, G-3, or G-7 are exempted from paying the SEVIS fee. Following table shows the fee for other various visa categories:

How to apply?
1) Initially, the candidates are required to apply to a US university with the help of experts. After being accepted to a school, the candidates will receive one of following two forms:
- Form I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status) for F-1 and M-1 students,
- Form DS-2019 (Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1) Status for J-1 students.
2) Then the candidates would be required to go online and pay the I-901 SEVIS fee once they receive their I-20 or DS-2019 form from their respective school.
3) Afterwards, the candidates need to apply for an international student visa at the US embassy or consulate.
4) Then they need to fill out the DS-160 form online and additionally they are require to fill out the Online Non-immigrant Visa Application (Form DS-160) and make the selection of the US embassy where they will interview for their visa on this application by contacting to the nearest US embassy or consulate (preferably, the one he/she has listed on their online application) to arrange for their visa interview after they’ve filed Form DS-16.
5) Then they need to pay the application fee of 160 USD and attend their visa interview. In case the candidates will be selected then they might require to pay the visa issuance fee and finally the visa will be granted to the candidate.
Post Study Work Option
Those students who have a F1 Student are eligible for up to 12 months of OPT i.e., optional practical training on completion of their graduation. Through this, they can work for one year after their studies. This is a temporary job permissible visa that offers opportunities to the students to gain practical experience in their field of study. To remain in the US further, the students can apply for a work visa.
The table depicted below shows the steps to apply for a F1 Visa:

Student Dependent Visa (F2 Visa)
The student dependent visa is also known as F2 Visa. It is a non-immigrant dependent visa where the dependent family members (spouse and unmarried children under the age of 21 of the individual who is studying in US) of the F1 student visa holders can arrive in the US. In order to be eligible for the same, the primary candidate must have enough funds to support their family in the US.
F2 Visa Requirements
- Passport (both original and photocopies)
- Visa application confirmation (DS-160)
- A photograph conforming to U.S. visa rules
- Birth certificate for dependent children
- Marriage certificate for spouses
