Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) have made headlines again by issuing invitations to apply (ITAs) to 1,800 candidates in the third Express Entry draw this week. This draw, focusing on French language proficiency, required candidates to have a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 400 to be considered.

Key Highlights of the Latest Express Entry Draw

  1. Date: July 18, 2024
  2. Number of ITAs Issued: 1,800
  3. Minimum CRS Score: 400

Today's draw features one of the lowest CRS scores of the year for any Express Entry draw. This follows yesterday's draw where 6,300 Canadian Experience Class (CEC) candidates were invited with a CRS score of 515, marking the lowest score of any non-category-based selection draw this year.

Summary of Recent Express Entry Draws

Earlier this week, IRCC invited 1,391 candidates in a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)-only draw with a minimum CRS score of 670. On July 8, 3,200 candidates were invited in a category-based selection draw for French proficiency.

CRS Score Analysis:

CRS scores for PNP-only Express Entry draws tend to be higher than average. This is because Express Entry candidates who are successfully nominated for the PNP automatically receive an additional 600 CRS points on top of their existing score. For example, an Express Entry candidate with a score of 300 will have an overall CRS score of 900 upon successful nomination.

What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is Canada’s application management system for three economic immigration programs:

  1. Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
  2. Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
  3. Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

The system uses the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to evaluate candidates based on factors such as occupation, age, education, language ability, and work experience. Introduced in 2015, Express Entry has streamlined the immigration process with a standard six-month processing time.

What is Category-Based Selection?

Launched in 2023, category-based selection allows IRCC to target Express Entry candidates who are most likely to address Canada's workforce gaps or strengthen demographics. The categories include:

  1. Healthcare occupations
  2. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professions
  3. Trades occupations
  4. Transport occupations
  5. Agriculture and agri-food occupations
  6. French-language proficiency
